ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Since 1995 ACSF has brought its dynamic cultural art programs into a variety of communities through its “off-site” touring arts education programs. In high demand, ACSF’s performances, residency classes, and workshops continue to serve thousands of youth each year. Click here for a list of recent residencies and school performances. Our team of high-level instructors and performers offer a range of programs and can often adapt the program to meet your sites needs. Below is a basic description of the arts education program options. If you have questions about our in-school or in-community programs, e-mail our Program Coordinator Erica Hemenway at bookings@abada.org or fill out this online form to book a program at your site.
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES Assembly performances introduce students to the dynamic Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira, and the folk stick dance, maculelê. The artists of the ACSF Performance Troupe will discuss the history of these cultural art forms and demonstrate the physical skills and techniques involved in their mastery. Assembly programs also have an interactive question and answer discussion in which everyone is encouraged to participate.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS Residency programs consist of a series of classroom sessions of capoeira and/or maculelê. Residency programs offer students an active, in-depth cultural arts experience and give teachers and community centers an opportunity to incorporate cultural arts into their curriculum. Residencies are a minimum of 6 sessions and can be extended and offered year round.
WORKSHOPS Workshops offer an intensive introduction to capoeira or a given aspect from the art form, such as music or acrobatics. In a capoeira workshop, students explore basic capoeira techniques, stretches, and acrobatic movements.
They will use these movements to play spontaneous, improvised, self-created games of capoeira with the other children. Students work in partners and as a group. Participants learn Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Portuguese-language capoeira songs and learn about the history of capoeira. Emphasis is on cooperation, concentration, and the use of movement, rhythm, and song as methods of self-expression.
