A Few Words From Mestranda MARCIA

2011 was a busy and hard year, but we also had many successes. Some of the most notable highlights were our Kids' Graduation Ceremony, performing in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, and the August trip to the World Games in Brasil. At that event, Instrutor Corrente and Graduada Tulipa competed and Instrutor Corrente received his Purple Cord, making him my third student to achieve the title of "Instrutor."

We also celebrated my 20th year in the Bay Area with the presence of Mestre Cobra, and closed out the year with a New Year's party and homage to Iemanja.

I would like to give a big thank you to our beautiful Board members, our students and their families, the community that supports us and promotes our work, and to of all our funders. Your support is priceless, and we owe ACSF's success to all of you.

I am looking forward to 2012, which marks my 30th year as a capoeirista. I was fortunate enough to have started capoeira with Mestre Camisa, a visionary whose integrity and commitment I admire. Through capoeira, he is changing not just the lives of individuals but entire communities.

We are pleased to announce that, in December 2012, he will be coming to San Francisco to share his knowledge and teaching methods. It will be a unforgettable event.

I am taking on a mission this year to raise funds for a project of Mestre Camisa's CEMB, the "Centro Educacional Mestre Bimba" or Educational Center of Mestre Bimba. CEMB is a large piece of land outside Rio de Janeiro where capoeiristas from all over the world can go to be in touch with nature, train capoeira and have a closer encounter with Mestre Camisa and his vision. At CEMB, Mestre Camisa provides free capoeira classes for low-income children from the surrounding area and offers them an opportunity to learn a profession; become educated, literate adults; and have a brighter future.

We will be providing more information about this project throughout the year and I hope that many of you will get involved. Happy New Year to you all, Feliz Ano Novo para todos! Muitas felicidades para todos. Mestranda Márcia.
