Ponto de Cultura

In January 2007, through a program initiated by the Brazilian government to strengthen and rescue Brazilian culture, ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco (ACSF) was officially recognized for its work preserving and promoting Brazilian culture and was declared by Brazil's Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, as a "Ponto de Cultura" or "point of culture". ACSF is the only organization to be granted this prestigious title in the US, and one of only three outside of Brazil.

To date the Ponto de Cultura Project served 150 people and provided $15,000 in free classes to San Francisco Brazilians!

Funding for this amazing program ended in December 2009, yet ACSF continues to be a valuable resource for local and non-local Brazilians.

Through the "Ponto de Cultura" project, ACSF offered free classes in Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian Dance, Afro-Brazilian Percussion, and Portuguese Language to all Brazilians and first generation Brazilians of all ages.

In addition to Mestranda Márcia, we contracted Brazilian percussionist Gamo da Paz, dancer Taniâ Santiago, and Sonia Peyroton to offer these valuable programs. Many thanks to all who contributed to this project!

Please help spread the word about ACSF programs, which provide all people including Brazilian immigrants and descendants of Brazilian immigrants the chance to strengthen their knowledge, involvement and appreciation for Brazilian culture at one of San Francisco’s premier cultural organizations.
