ABADÁ-Capoeira Worldwide Celebrates Zumbimba

November: ABADÁ-Capoeira Worldwide Celebrates Zumbimba

Every November, ABADÁ-Capoeira holds ZUMBIMBA, one of its most important events, in Rio de Janeiro.

ZUMBIMBA is a chance to come together with other students within ABADÁ-Capoeira, exchange knowledge, and reaffirm the roots of our group. Capoeiristas from all over the world will go to ZUMBIMBA to learn from Mestre Camisa, to reconnect with the community and to get inspired.

The ZUMBIMBA celebration was started in 1991 by the Association of the Sons of Bimba (Filhos de Bimba, Bahia). It is held in November to observe two important days in Afro-Brazilian history: Dia da Consciência Negra (National Black Consciousness Day), which marks the death of Zumbi dos Palmares (November 20, 1695), an icon of the struggle against slavery in Brazil, and the birth date of Mestre Bimba (November 23, 1900), creator of Capoeira Regional and Mestre Camisa’s teacher.

In honor of this event, we’ll practice some earlier techniques of Mestre Bimba’s, including his movement sequences, throughout November.

Mestra Márcia and many others will be attending the events in Brazil this year.
