ACSF’s Artistic Director, Márcia Treidler and ACSF are the proud recipients of the prestigious Hewlett 50 Folk Artist Commission. The Hewlett 50 Award represents the largest single infusion of support into the vibrant, yet underfunded, area of folk and traditional arts commissions in the United States.
We are honored to be amongst the handful of cultural leaders and organizations to receive the award, and grateful for the investment and trust of the Hewlett Foundation.
The commission will support an innovative dream-project to research, document, and creatively present stories of female pioneers in Afro-Brazilian traditions, including Mestra Cigarra’s legendary role in Capoeira. This endeavor honors Márcia’s 40-year legacy and celebrates ACSF’s 30th anniversary milestones. We look forward to sharing this project with you as it develops over the next three years.
Many thanks to The Alliance for California Traditional Arts, the Hewlett Foundation, and Lily Kharrazi for their support and guidance. And for their commitment to honoring the broad and deep array of cultural expressions in the Bay Area performing arts community.
