I recently reflected on how unique capoeira is in that it encourages participation from people of vastly different ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. This diversity is not only accepted but celebrated.
Capoeira creates extraordinary connections. After over 30 years of leading ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco alongside Mestra Márcia Cigarra, I am continually amazed and delighted by the incredible relationships our art fosters. It brings a smile to my face when I recall how individuals who seem so different can find care and respect for one another. I have witnessed teenagers skillfully dodging kicks from retirees, tech workers singing alongside professional artists, and countless people of varying races, languages, and life experiences moving together in harmony.
It’s truly beautiful and an example of what is possible.
As you might guess, I’m reaching out to ask you to take a moment to acknowledge how amazing our capoeira community is and what it has offered you, your loved ones, or your community. I would be grateful if you could help sustain our programming with a donation.
In honor of Mestra’s 60th birthday, we’ve set an ambitious goal of raising $60,000 to support our school by the end of 2025. Can you help us achieve this?
When you donate, you’re not just supporting classes; you’re nurturing connection, belonging, and the beautiful moments when two people discover they have more in common than they ever imagined.
Can you help us build new relationships that lead to a more harmonious community and world using capoeira? Consider making a tax-deductible donation today.
With gratitude and axé,
Jennifer Walsh “Professora Sereia”
