Dear Community,
The past has shaped our present and will echo into our future. Last March, our Artistic Director, Márcia Treidler, also known as Mestra Cigarra, and our performance company staged a preview of “CIGARRA & Guerreiras Nessa Arte,” a multidimensional show that illuminated stories of women in Afro-Brazilian traditions—including Márcia’s legendary role as a trailblazer in capoeira. The March show provided a sneak peek of the larger event at Z Space on May 3-4, 2024.
One year later, as we celebrate Women’s History Month, Mestra Cigarra’s legacy continues to inspire people around the world who have connected with her.
Her legacy as a female pioneer in capoeira is most pronounced in the quantity and stature of her female students and teaching mentees. This month, we’ll be using our Instagram and Facebook channels to feature some of the women who performed in the CIGARRA show and who carry forward Mestra Cigarra’s story and teachings—here at ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco and beyond.
Love & Solidarity,
Executive Director Jennifer Walsh / Professora Sereia
