Capoeira Connections: A Memoir in Motion follows Wesolowski’s journey from capoeira novice to instructor while drawing on her decades of research as an anthropologist in Brazil, Angola, Europe, and the United States. Through a story of local practice and global flow, this ethnographic memoir offers an intimate portrait of a game, and what it means in people’s lives. Ultimately the author argues that, in an increasingly fractured world, capoeira offers opportunities for connection, dialogue, and collaboration.

Katya Wesolowski (Camarão) is a Lecturing Fellow in Cultural Anthropology and Dance at Duke University. She has trained in various styles of capoeira and was a long-time member of ABADÁ-capoeira in Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, and New York City.
