To celebrate the important occasions of our batizado week and Mestra Cigarra’s 60th birthday, Mestre Morcego will be joining our community from Brazil to teach workshops throughout the week. But who is he?
Mestre Morcego, whose full name is Rogério Francisco da Silva, was born in Rio de Janeiro. He began practicing capoeira in 1981 under Mestre Camisa at Aterro do Flamengo, RJ, Brazil. In 1989, he attained his brown cord, and in 1991, he, along with Mestres Cobra and Canguru, became one of the first students of Mestre Camisa to earn their brown/red cords, which is the final graduation before becoming a mestrando/a.
In 1995, Morcego received his red cord and was recognized as Mestrando Morcego. Sixteen years later, in 2011, he was awarded the title of Mestre by Mestre Camisa and ABADÁ-Capoeira. Between 1984 and 2011, he successfully balanced his commitments as an active member of the Marine Corps of Brazil with his passion for capoeira.
Currently, Mestre Morcego dedicates himself exclusively to capoeira. He supervises and guides the members of ABADÁ, teaching both locally and traveling internationally to share his cultural knowledge and expertise.
We are so excited to welcome him to San Francisco this month!
