If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area and haven’t yet seen Márcia, the award-winning short documentary by Claudia A. Escobar, we hope you’ll join us for its next local screening on August 12 at Oakland’s historic Grand Lake Theater. The screening is presented by Bay Area film collective Cinemama.
Through never-before-seen archival footage and the voices of Márcia Treidler’s family, friends, and loved ones, Márciatraces her extraordinary journey—from a childhood on the streets of Brazil in the 1960s to becoming one of the world’s pioneering capoeira mestras. Her groundbreaking career helped open doors for women and LGBTQ+ practitioners, forever changing the landscape of capoeira.
We are incredibly proud of Claudia (Joaninha) for bringing this powerful story to the screen and look forward to celebrating this special hometown screening with our community. We hope to see you there!
