Parent Information & FAQ
This event is designed for Kids capoeira students of all ages and all levels, with dedicated programming for:
- Kids (Ages 5–12)
- Family members and friends are warmly invited to attend the Batizado & Celebration on Sunday.
A Batizado is a traditional capoeira ceremony where students are welcomed, recognized, or advanced in their capoeira journey. For kids, it is a joyful, supportive experience that includes:
- Playing capoeira in the roda
- Receiving guidance from guest artists
- Cord changes based on readiness
It is a celebration of growth not a test and every child is honored.
No. While attending workshops and rehearsals is highly encouraged to help kids feel confident and prepared, participation in the Batizado does not require attending every session.
Children should wear:
- Their capoeira uniform (abada)
- A capoeira t-shirt (they will receive a batizado tee for use on Saturday, but can wear any white shirt to the workshops)
Bare feet (traditional for capoeira) - Please bring water and arrive a few minutes early.
Yes! Parents are welcome and encouraged to:
- Observe workshops quietly
- Attend and enjoy the Batizado & Celebration
- Support their child throughout the event
The Saturday Batizado is a family-friendly community event open to all.
Absolutely. All kids’ activities are:
- Age-appropriate
- Supervised by experienced instructors
- Designed to be fun, positive, and encouraging
- Safety and emotional well-being are a top priority.
Cord changes are determined by instructors based on:
- Attendance and engagement
- Individual progress and readiness
- Overall participation in the program
- Not every child will change cords, and this is completely normal. Every student is celebrated for their unique journey.
Cord changes are determined by instructors based on:
- Participating students should be registered.
- Non-participating siblings may attend the Batizado as audience members and do not need to register.
- Children under 12 attend free as audience members.
Cord changes are determined by instructors based on:
- Audience attendance: Free (donations welcome)
- Suggested donation: $10+ at the door
- Workshops: Require registration
- All donations support guest artists and community programming.
Yes! Teens and adults are invited to attend workshops throughout the week, and are encouraged to attend the batizado in full uniform to support the event. This is a great opportunity to train, learn, and connect across generations.

- Parents/audience members will be welcomed beginning at 1:30 PM.
Opening Performance
The event begins with a high-energy capoeira performance featuring guest artists, instructors, and students
Kids’ Batizado Ceremony
- Children will be called into the roda by age or group
- Each child will have a turn to play capoeira with a guest or instructor
- The focus is on participation, encouragement, and joy
Changing of Cords
- Eligible students will receive new cords
- Instructors will recognize each child’s progress and dedication
- All students are celebrated, whether or not they receive a new cord
Closing & Community Connection
- Group photos, hugs, and congratulations
- Families are welcome to stay, connect, and celebrate together
If this is your child’s first Batizado, you can expect a warm, supportive, and uplifting experience.
- Your child does NOT need to be perfect
- Batizado is not about performance or competition. Kids are encouraged to:
Try their best - Have fun
- Participate at their own comfort level
- Every child is supported by instructors and guest artists.
- Kids are guided step-by-step
- Instructors stay nearby throughout the ceremony
- New students often go with a familiar teacher or helper
- Nervous feelings are normal and usually disappear once the music starts!
Not receiving a new cord is completely normal, especially at a first Batizado. Growth looks different for every child, and participation itself is a big achievement.
Excitement, shyness, pride, or even happy tears are all part of the experience. Batizado is meaningful, and kids respond in their own way.
- Cheer, smile, and enjoy
- Take photos and videos respectfully
- Trust the instructors to guide your child
- Your presence and encouragement mean everything.
If your child is feeling nervous or you have questions, please reach out ahead of time. We’re happy to walk you through what to expect and make sure your family feels comfortable and supported. You can speak to an instructor in class at any time, or feel free to email the office with questions, info@abada.org.
